Shipping & Delivery

Everything is packed and sent by hand from the studio in Pretoria, South Africa.

Original works and handmade paper are packed differently and priced differently, so please read the section that applies to your order.

Processing time

Orders are packed and dispatched within 2–5 working days of payment clearing.

Made-to-order paper and commissioned work take longer. Where a listing is made to order, the current lead time is shown on the product page and confirmed by email once your order is placed.

You'll receive a tracking number by email as soon as the parcel is collected.

How work is packed

Original works on paper travel flat, never rolled, unless the piece is too large to ship flat. Each work is interleaved with acid-free glassine, mounted between two sheets of rigid board, sealed in a waterproof sleeve, and boxed. Framed work is packed with corner protection and a double-walled outer carton.

Handmade paper ships flat in a rigid-backed mailer for smaller sheets, or boxed for larger sheets and bulk orders. Deckle edges are protected but are meant to be irregular — that irregularity is a feature of the sheet, not damage in transit.

Packaging materials are recyclable or reusable wherever possible.

Delivery within main centres is typically 1–3 working days after dispatch. Outlying and rural addresses take longer and may attract an additional surcharge, which will be quoted to you before the parcel is sent.

Collection from the studio in Pretoria can be arranged by appointment at no charge — get in touch before ordering.

International shipping

I ship worldwide by tracked courier. Rates are quoted per order by destination zone and parcel size, separately from the price of the work.

ZoneIndicative rateTransit
Southern Africa (SADC)from R3505–10 working days
Europe, UK, North Americafrom R5503–7 working days
Rest of worldfrom R6505–12 working days

Original works over R8,000 are not shipped at a flat rate. Shipping on these is quoted individually so the work can be packed properly and insured for its full value. Add the piece to your cart and select Request shipping quote, or email me directly — I'll come back to you within one working day.

Transit times are courier estimates from the date of dispatch and exclude time spent in customs.

Customs, duties and import taxes

Import duties, taxes and clearance fees are the responsibility of the buyer and are not included in the price you pay at checkout. These are charged by your own country's customs authority, not by me, and I have no way to calculate or waive them in advance.

Every parcel is declared accurately at its full sale value. I cannot mark a sale as a gift or under-declare its value — doing so is illegal in both the sending and receiving country, and it voids all transit insurance on the parcel.

  • Original works are hand-executed drawings and classify under HS heading 9701. Most countries, including the UK, EU member states and the United States, admit original art duty-free — though import VAT may still apply at your local rate.
  • Handmade paper is a manufactured good and does not receive that treatment. Standard duty and VAT apply.

If a parcel is refused, abandoned, or returned to me because import charges went unpaid, the original shipping cost is not refundable, and any return freight and storage charges will be deducted from your refund.

Insurance, loss and damage

All parcels are shipped tracked. Original works and any order over R2,000 are insured for their full value.

If your parcel arrives damaged, photograph the outer packaging before you open it further, then photograph the work itself, and email me within 7 days of delivery. Keep all packaging until the claim is resolved — couriers routinely reject claims where the packaging has been discarded.

If your parcel doesn't arrive, contact me and I'll open a trace with the courier. Please allow the courier's full investigation window (usually 10–21 working days internationally) before a replacement or refund can be issued.

Damaged or lost original works cannot always be replaced, as each is unique. In that case you'll receive a full refund including shipping.

Addresses

Please check your delivery address carefully. I ship to the address exactly as you confirm it.

Address corrections after dispatch are charged at cost by the courier and passed on to you. Parcels returned to the studio because of an incorrect or incomplete address will be re-sent once the return and outbound shipping is paid.

Couriers in some regions cannot deliver to PO boxes. If a street address isn't possible, contact me before ordering.

Returns

Original artworks are non-refundable. A return may only be made at the purchaser's own discretion and at the purchaser's own cost — return shipping, insurance and any resulting fees are the buyer's responsibility. Commissioned work is not returnable.

Handmade paper may be returned unused and unopened within 14 days. Custom-made and cut-to-order paper is not returnable.

South African customers buying online also have the cooling-off rights set out in section 44 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, which are in addition to and not limited by anything above.

Delays outside my control

I can't be held responsible for delays caused by customs inspections, courier backlogs, strikes, load-shedding affecting courier depots, severe weather, or any other event beyond my reasonable control. I'll always keep you updated on where a parcel is when something goes wrong.

Questions

Email debruyn.sarel@gmail.com or message the studio on WhatsApp at +27 68 912 5700.

If you're buying an original work and want to talk through packing, framing, insurance or a specific delivery date before you commit, please just ask. I'd far rather answer the question first.
