Artist Biography

Cameron de Bruyn is a Pretoria based artist who continuously explores techniques in handmade paper. Following an art residency at Manang Artist Residency in Nepal, he questioned what the community at large actually perceives on a daily basis?

During his time in Kathmandu and Ngawal, he fostered connections and learnt more about papermaking through a process of trial and error. This led to many discoveries which he continued to pursue when he got back to South Africa.

His current work mounts assemblages of paper waste onto masonite boards salvaged after the elections. Into this surface he works oil pastel and encaustic wax, massaging and layering the paper into forms that consider the cultural dust we leave upon the earth.

Cameron’s focus is to engage with the viewer. He has observed that we each see the world differently — and that many of us are not perceiving reality as it is, only reacting to it. By drawing attention to what we miss sight of, he hopes it can persuade the viewer to stop and think rather than simply responding.
