Title: The Cave Prayer
Medium: Pen, ink and charcoal on Rosapina Fabriano
Dimensions: 50 x 70 x 0.15 cm

Description:

This piece is symbolic of a hike I went on in South Africa. Along the hike it was known that there were caves that we could explore. Once we arrived close to the cave we were redirected by the police which had informed us of a "religious" murder which had taken place.

Often the caves were visited by religious members who would burn candles and pray. However South Africa also has a rich history of interesting religious practices which merge with cultural initiation rituals. I could not help wonder how someone could be murdered at a religious site.

In this piece, I sought to evoke the raw, primal forces of life and death using charcoal, pen, and India ink. The symbolic elements—skulls, the bird, and the fragmented faces—express the dance of existence and memory. This drawing carries a haunting, powerful energy, inviting viewers to explore their own connection to the ancient and mysterious rhythms that shape our being. It will bring a profound, evocative presence to your space.
