Description:

On the day I was about to leave Ngawal, after a bitter sweet moment. The members of the Manang Artist Residency went to have a final meal at a neighbouring hostel before I left the next morning. During the meal I received a call from a very special person in my life. She told me her sister had passed. Within in the next 3 days I departed from Ngawal at an altitude of 3650m and would land back home in Pretoria to attend a funeral. During the funeral there was a cloud burst followed by the sun starting to find its way out. The sound of the "Piet my vrou" signalled to me the importance of being home.

Not long after that time, I worked on this steel plate etching under the guidance of Mimi van der Merwe, using non-toxic methods to bite the plate. I chose to draw Mapungubwe, because this was a special place for my friend.
