Description:

"Eroded homeland" - Echoing my homeland where I grew up. Yet also not mine since, my ancestors were not originally from there. However the involvement of my family can not be understated. The title is a comment on what it means to passively observe as our ancestors do. My oupa was a knowledge man and capable of speaking most South African languages. Yet I never managed to learn enough before he passed. This did impact me and made me inquisitive. The Drakenzberg region which has quite extensive soil erosion was the subject of my focus. Is also a magnanimous and powerful place. After stripping our daily life and quarrels, we are left with only a soul. This is where the artist lives.

Exhibition:

Ancestral Erosions - 2024

"Ancestral Erosions" delves into the profound relationship between the earth's surface and the cultural layers that rest upon it. This exhibition explores soil erosion and environmental degradation as both natural processes and human-induced crises, echoing the erosion of ancestral wisdom, traditions, and our spiritual connection to the land. It is a meditation on what we lose — materially and immaterially — when landscapes are stripped bare.
